Festivals in Glasgow 2008

Glasgow proudly hosts a myriad of lively annual festivals and cultural events in and around the city centre. The city's extensive calendar of events features a colourful array of street fairs, parades, music festivals and sporting events such as the Great Scottish Run. Local and National Newspapers regularly feature the latest events in Glasgow, publishing up-to-date listings.

Celtic Connections marks the beginning of Glasgow's festival season in January, featuring Celtic music and art from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and other Celtic regions of Europe and North America. Approaching its 14th year, this festival welcomes some high profile performers such as Salsa Celtica, the Dubliners, Ally Bain and Phil Cunningham among many others.

Traditional Scottish festivals are well represented in Glasgow's festival calendar such as Piping Live which celebrates the best of current and emerging piping music. The World Pipe Band Championship celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2006, featuring over 200 pipe bands competing in this high-profile event. St. Andrews Day (30th November) and Burns Nights (25th January) are celebrated in traditional Scottish style with music and poetry, good food and a nip of whisky!

Most of Glasgow's festivals and cultural events take place in the summer when the city comes alive with colourful street festivals, parades and outdoor music. Sample the Glasgow International Jazz Festival, the vibrant West End Festival and the Glasgow Mela, celebrating Asian performing arts. Live and Loud, staged at Hampden Park, home of Scottish football, showcases all the latest names and groups in pop and R&B, from Jamelia to McFly.

Glasgow's main tourist information office situated in George Square is a good source of information about forthcoming festivals and events in the city. Many of the festivals attract thousands of visitors from the UK and overseas, such as the spectacular Hogmanay Party in George Square, the focal point of New Year's Eve Events. Visitors will not be disappointed with the array of music, arts, cinema and literature featured in Glasgow's annual festivals.
