| Whether you want to spend an afternoon
or night in Glasgow's West End, the charming cobbled Ashton Lane offers
an ambitious array of pubs, bars and grills to whet your appetite or quench
your thirst. Situated directly behind Hilhead Subway station, Ashton Lane
has always been the focal point of West End nightlife and is a regular haunt
for West Enders, Glaswegians and visitors alike, and of course the local
student population. A handsomely dusty establishment that oozes with Irish charm, Jinty McGuinty's is the least faddish of the collection of bars on the Lane, playing host to regular live music from traditional Irish folk to contemporary genres. Friday and Saturday Nights are extremely busy when it is elbow room only, so ensure to turn up early to get a seat in the snug. Weather permitting, patrons often spill on to the lane, particularly on summer evenings.
Named in honour of iconic crooner Jacques, Brel is one of Ashton Lane's mainstays and showcases a regular programme of live acoustic music. The bar is renowned for its superb array of Belgian Lager and Beer on tap. Drinkers seeking to venture on the wild side should sample the dark and full and potent De Koninck real ale or a host of other ales infused with raspberry, blackcurrant and banana. Another popular haunt in Ashton Lane's vibrant social scene include Vodka Wodka where I you can sample the criminally legal 79.9% Polish Pure Spirit if you are brave enough. Recent additions facing this establishment include Nude and Radio, both offering a more cosy and intimate affair. Ashton Lane is also home to two of Glasgow's finest establishments, The Ubiquitous Chip, exclusive restaurant which has built its reputation of championing Scottish produce and cuisine, and ultimately, The Grosvenor Cinema offering an eclectic mix of world and alternative cinema screenings. The Ubiquitous chip is home to a deceptively spacious bar on the upper floor and is a popular venue to spot Scottish and UK renowned celebrities. In the last 10 years Ashton Lane has become one of Glasgow and the West End's leading festival venues, hosting its own Beer Fest in October, its own Hogmanay Street Party and playing a significant role in the annual West End Festival in June. It will continue to remain the hub of the West End's vibrant social scene, where students, celebrities, visitors and Glasgwegians rub shoulders with one another. You can sample all the action that this ever-popular cobbled lane has to offer, just 10 minutes walk away from the Devoncove Hotel. Notable nights for students include Tuesdays and Thursdays, while a mixture of students, locals and people of all tastes swarm the City Centre and West End on Friday's and Saturdays. Despite this most clubs and bar's have their own special nights meaning the city centre is animated any night of the week. Visitors are spoiled for choice in terms of dining establishments across the city. Italian, American, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Spanish and of course Scottish Restaurant's in addition to many others can be easily found throughout the Glasgow. Guests in the city are also encouraged to enjoy world class ballet, opera or theatrical musicals and pantomime for the children constantly running throughout the Glasgow's many prestigious theatres. When the sun falls on Glasgow, the life remains and the city becomes ever more vibrant. |
