Specials Offers for Theatre Breaks
Being a cosmopolitan city of both culture and art, Glasgow offers much in the form of theatre and performance. Whether it is the abundance or street theatre or magic, or within the both architecturally and artistically acclaimed theatres, Glasgow is proud of it's abundance of artistic brilliance throughout the city. Glasgow's vast array of highly acclaimed theatre's include the Citizen's. The building originally the Royal Princess's Theatre (built in 1878) was renamed after a small group of Glasgow playwrights in 1945 formed The Glasgow Citizens Theatre Company and based their work in the building. Glasgow is also home to one of Scotland' most historic and significant theatres - The King's. Opened in 1904 on the designs of prolific theatre artist Frank Matcham, the kings has played host to many top stars and shows over the years. Also the setting of the opening ceremony for Glasgow's accolade of European City of Culture 1990, the King's has debatably the best Christmas pantomime in the UK year after year. Located behind Europe's largest public reference library, is another
of Glasgow's inspirational theatres - the Mitchell theatre. Originally
built between 1873-7, the Mitchell was destroyed in a devastating fire
in 1962 and subsequently rebuilding was completed in 1980. Amongst others
Glasgow is especially proud of it's Theatre Royal, the home of Scottish
Opera. In addition to this the beautiful theatre also presents Scottish
Ballet and other world class companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company
and the Royal National Theatre. With these and many more, Glasgow is home
to some of Europe's finest and most prestigious theatres and host to many
world class performances. |
