The internationally acclaimed Tramway Theatre in Glasgow's south side is a leading venue for contemporary visual and performing art. Its reputation is based on a commitment to staging the most innovative and outstanding work by both Scottish and international artists. A distinctive character and history ensure a unique venue to produce and experience the best works in contemporary art.

Opened in 1893 as a tram shed, the building has served as Glasgow's main tram depot and factory, the Museum of Transport and then, following the museum's relocation in 1986 to the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow's west end, the building was saved in 1988 when the Tramway organisation was launched.

The first performances at the Tramway were in 1989 and since then new works in performing and visual arts have been commissioned, creating scope for local artists to stage their work. An extensive redevelopment of the vast building was completed in June 2000 when the venue opened its doors with improved facilities and exhibition spaces, enabling the Tramway to maintain and increase its reputation as a leading theatre of contemporary visual art.

Not only serving its purpose as a leading centre for visual arts, the Tramway boasts its own purpose-built auditorium known as Tramway 1. This contemporary theatre space showcases a sensational range of performances and ambitious productions throughout the year. The Tramway takes centre stage during the annual Triptych festival, one of the most eclectic and vibrant music festivals in Europe. Embracing all musical genres, the Tramway enthralls festival audiences with some of the most inventive artists and groups in the industry.

A must see is the award-winning Hidden Gardens, situated at the roof top of Glasgow's Tramway Theatre. In the summer season, this delightful and intriguing external space transforms into a vibrant showcase of activity designed for all age groups at this stunning performing and visual arts venue.
